Why is ransomware a buzzword in Switzerland right now?
The Swiss provider of government software, Xplain, was hit by a ransomware attack. The attackers posted some of the stolen data on the darknet after encrypting it, and the company was blackmailed with the stolen data.
With that regard, the Federal Department of Finance (FDF) announced that after thorough investigations, it must be assumed that operational data could also be affected, although there are no concrete findings on this yet. It was also reported that, according to current knowledge, the Federal Administration does not assume that the attackers can directly access the Confederation’s systems through the Xplain systems. Further investigations and measures within the federal administration are being coordinated by the National Cyber Security Centre (NCSC).

In a ransomware attack, the information on an IT system is encrypted, and only after payment of a ransom is decryption possible.
