The Portugal Digital Nomad Visa

Portugal introduced a digital nomad visa in October 2022 in response to the rise of remote work. Non-EU/EEA workers who are self-employed or working for a foreign company and earn at least four times Portugal’s minimum wage, about €3,040 per month, are eligible. The visa offers two options: a temporary stay of up to one year or a renewable residence permit for up to five years, providing flexibility to meet individual needs.

The Golden Visa: A Pathway to Residency and Investment

In addition to the Digital Nomad Visa, Portugal offers another attractive option for foreigners looking to relocate: the Golden Visa programme. Since its launch in 2012, the Golden Visa programme has successfully attracted foreign investment to boost Portugal’s economy, attracting thousands of families to settle there.

The programme allows individuals to obtain residency through investments such as purchasing real estate, creating jobs, or funding scientific research and development. The minimum real estate investment is €350,000, but other investment options are available.

The Golden Visa offers investors and their families the opportunity to live, work, and study in Portugal and travel within the Schengen Area, allowing for European exploration. In addition, after five years, it allows for an application for permanent residency and potential Portuguese citizenship, extending the benefits to live, work and study in any EU member country.

The Portuguese Startup Scene: A Hub of Innovation

Portugal’s startup ecosystem has thrived in recent years, attracting entrepreneurs, investors, and digital nomads from around the world. The country’s supportive business environment, skilled workforce, and entrepreneurial spirit have positioned it as a hotbed of innovation.

One of the defining moments in Portugal’s startup scene was the location of Web Summit, the world’s largest tech conference, in Lisbon in 2016. This annual event brings together thousands of startup founders, investors, and industry leaders, creating a platform for networking, collaboration, and knowledge sharing.

Supporting Infrastructure and Resources

Portugal has made significant investments in infrastructure and resources to support its startup ecosystem. The country boasts a robust high-speed internet infrastructure, ensuring reliable connectivity for digital nomads and entrepreneurs. In addition, there are a wide range of coworking spaces and incubators that provide a collaborative and supportive environment for startups to thrive.

Government initiatives such as the StartUP Voucher programme and the Portugal Ventures Investment Fund also contribute to the growth of the startup scene. These programmes provide early-stage startups with financial support, mentorship, and networking opportunities to help them turn their ideas into successful businesses.
