Founded in 1885 by Ulrich Schaerer in Munsingen, Switzerland, USM was initially focused on ironwork and window fittings. In the early 1960s, the founder’s grandson, Paul Schaerer, worked with Swiss architect Fritz Haller to modernise the factory. Together, they designed a building with modular architecture, which inspired the creation of the flexible USM Haller System in 1963. This innovative furniture product became a key to the company’s success and revolutionised the industry.
