Place 10: Hoffmann, Oeri: Roche

The company from Switzerland was founded in 1896 by Fritz Hoffmann in Basel and now employs more than 100,000 people in over 100 countries. According to the Bloomberg Billionaires Index, the Hoffmann and Oeri families are earning USD 45.1 billion in assets. 

Place 9: Thomson: Thomson Reuters

David Thomson and his family control a media and publishing empire founded by his grandfather, Roy Thomson. The family’s largest holding is more than 320 million shares of Thomson Reuters, where Thomson serves as chairman. The family had a net worth of USD 48.8 billion in 2022, making it the richest family in Canada.

The U.S. agricultural group Cargill is one of the largest grain buyers in the world. The company is owned by the Cargill and MacMillan families. According to Forbes, the Cargill-McMillan clan has a total of 14 billionaires, more than any other family in the world. According to the Bloomberg Billionaires Index, the family’s total wealth amounts to USD 65.2 billion.

The brothers Alain and Gerard Wertheimer reap what their grandfather and designer Coco Chanel sowed in the early 1920s: the legendary luxury fashion brand that produced classics such as the “little black” or the perfume Chanel No. 5. With a turnover of more than USD 17 billion last year, racing horses and vineyards led to a family fortune of around USD 79 billion.

In 1957, Dhirubhai Ambani founded the predecessor of today’s oil giant, Reliance Industries. His son, Mukesh Ambani, from Mumbai, is now awake to a world-wide empire. The ruling family of Saudi Arabia is one of the ten richest families in the world. The USD 105 billion asset estimate is based on cumulative payments received by members of the royal family over the past 50 years from the Royal Diwan, the king’s executive office.

In 1967, the brothers Frederick, Charles, David, and William inherited their father Fred, who in 1925 founded an oil refinery in Kansas with a classmate. The brothers Charles and David, who died in 2019, created Koch Industries, a mixed company for plastics, oil and gas, chemistry, and artificial fertilizers. With a total wealth of USD 128.8 billion, the family is ranked third.

A fortune of USD 160 billion makes the descendants of Frank Mars the second richest family in the world.

Owners of the world’s largest retail chain, Walmart, the Waltons can call themselves the richest family in the world. More than 12,000 branches worldwide recorded the family company’s balance sheet in 2022, with assets of USD 224.5 billion. This makes the distance to the second-richest Mars family very clear.
