Born in Bern, Switzerland, in 1936, Wyss grew up in a modest household. His father, a mechanical calculator salesman, instilled in him a strong work ethic and a love of nature. In 2009, Wyss founded the Wyss Institute for Biologically Inspired Engineering at Harvard University.
