The first half of 2023 sees the Swiss International Air Lines once more produce positive numbers. The airline made 2.5 billion Swiss francs in revenue, matching its previous pandemic-free first half of 2019. Swiss' operational profit increased to 338.3 million, a mere 40% increase over the same period in 2019.

This is the first half-year since the Corona issue began that the airline has been able to make a connection to the period before to the epidemic. At the time, they even outnumbered their numbers. It had a 36.6 million franc quarterly deficit by the end of 2021. The period before to Corona was substantially better, as seen by the airline’s 5.3 billion franc in sales and 578 million franc operational profit in 2019.

The Austerity Measures Have Positive Results

A reform strategy was implemented in 2021 in reaction to the pandemic, which resulted in a 15% fleet reduction and the elimination of 1,700 full-time positions. Long-term cost savings from this will amount to 500 million francs.

SWISS ran about 123,000 flights in 2022. The amount has increased by a factor of two since last year. The passenger counts showed a similar upward trajectory; in 2022, there were approximately 15 million passengers overall. (However, the numbers in 2019 were still at a record high of more than 20 million people, and there were 150,000 flights.)

This year, SWISS profited from increasing supply, particularly during the summer, and persistently high freight demand. Markus Binkert, director of finance, was satisfied with the outcome. “The demand for air travel remained much higher than the supply, and like the entire sector, this was advantageous to us,” he added.

The Number of Workers Will Rise

The SWISS will continue to provide 85 percent of the flight capacity (measured in offered seat kilometres) that the airline 2019 has requested for the entire year. This number will rise even further in 2024. Additionally, the employee count, which was on average 9 045 in 2022, will rise in the future.

The Swiss International Airline, also known as SWISS, was created in 2001 as the country of Switzerland’s new national airline following the bankruptcy of Swissair. At Zurich Airport are its main offices. Since 2005, it has been a part of Lufthansa Group. In 2022, the Lufthansa Group trailed the Ryanair Group in terms of popularity among European airlines. The Airbus A320 has been in the Lufthansa fleet the longest.
