Professional Life and Achievements
In 2001, Sandberg joined the search engine company Google, Inc., as general manager of the division. Soon after, she became Vice President of Global Online Sales and Operations. She was responsible for the development of AdWords, which serves text ads on search results pages, and AdSense, which delivers relevant ads to the websites of individuals and businesses that contract with Google. As such, she was also instrumental in shaping Google’s image.
In 2004, she was put in charge of Google.org, the for-profit and philanthropic arm of Google that focuses on issues such as climate change, public health, and poverty. In 2008, Sandberg was hired as Facebook’s first COO. Facebook has experienced impressive growth since its founding in 2004, and founder Mark Zuckerberg said he needed someone with more executive experience (like Sandberg) to oversee the day-to-day operations of the company. Thus, she became the second-most important person after Zuckerberg.
Special Commitment to Women in Business
Sandberg became a strong advocate for a more proactive approach for women wanting to succeed in business. She often pointed out that despite the great strides women have brought about through feminism, business leaders are still predominantly male, and women have an “ambition gap” to close. She also addressed this in her book “Lean In: Women, Work, and the Will to Lead” (2013). In “Lean In” she tells her personal story, uses research to reveal gender differences, and gives practical advice on how women can achieve their goals. “This book challenges us to stop talking about what women can’t do and start talking about what we can do and work together for a more equal world,” online critics said of the publication.
The book coincided with the launch of Lean In, an educational and community-building organisation for women in business. While Mrs. Sandberg’s feedback for her book was generally positive, some critics noted that her experience and position were so rare and unique and had nothing to do with the typical working woman.

However, this did not affect the success that the book had or her plans to focus on philanthropy in the future.
