Tourism did not prevail on the island. Due to their rather isolated location in the Mediterranean, the inhabitants were largely engaged in livestock farming and agriculture. The Habsburg Archduke Ludwig Salvador fell so in love with the island during his trips that he wrote a multi-volume tour guide about it. In the mid-1930s, the first hotel on the island was built, and 20 years later, the first airport. First used as a military airport and later as a civilian airport, it laid the foundation for international tourism.

Today, Ibiza has 550 accommodations with over 80,000 available beds.
