A Curator’s Fair: Celebrating Institutional Exposure
Dubbed the “curators’ fair,” Artissima has earned a reputation as a one-stop shop for institutional exposure. While sensational sales may not be the primary goal for exhibitors, the fair offers a unique opportunity to connect with discerning curators from across Europe. Artissima goes beyond mere exhibition space. The fair actively involves curators from top European institutions by inviting them to chair juries for various awards and curate parts of the program. This curated approach ensures that museum participation is not left to chance and provides valuable exposure for artists.
Affordable Participation Fees and Risk-Taking Galleries
One of the distinguishing features of Artissima is its relatively accessible participation fees. Owned by the public Fondazione Torino Musei, the fair offers galleries the opportunity to take risks and present unconventional works. This support for risk-taking fosters an environment of artistic experimentation and innovation. Galleries can focus on presenting their artists to a discerning audience without the pressure of immediate sales.
The Fondazione Arte CRT: Supporting Artistic Endeavors
Fondazione Arte CRT, a major supporter of Artissima, plays a crucial role in strengthening the impact of the fair. The Foundation allocates substantial funds for “long-term loans” to prestigious institutions such as the Castello di Rivoli and the Galleria Civica di Arte Moderna (GAM). The recent renewal of the Foundation’s Board, which now includes international figures such as Hans Ulrich Obrist and Suhanya Raffel, further strengthens Artissima’s international reach and influence.
Exhibiting Galleries: A Diverse and Exciting Line-Up
Artissima 2023 featured a diverse selection of 181 Italian and international galleries, 39 of which were making their debuts at the fair. These galleries represented a wide range of artistic practices, presenting works by both emerging and established artists. Among the first-time participants, Milan’s L.U.P.O. gallery enjoyed great success, with founder Massimiliano Lorenzelli stating that their booth sold out within hours. Turin’s vibrant and dynamic art scene continues to attract galleries and collectors alike.

The Theme & Highlights of Artissima 2023
Artissima 2023’s theme, “Relations of Care,” reflects the fair’s commitment to addressing pressing global issues. The theme emphasizes the significance of protecting the environment and all species, drawing inspiration from the work of Brazilian anthropologist Renzo Taddei. In a time of global tension and division, Artissima aims to promote the idea of putting care at the forefront of our lives, fostering a sense of responsibility and empathy.
Artissima 2023 has seen many highlights and important acquisitions. Galleries such as Mor Charpentier and Sies + Höke presented exceptional works that caught the attention of collectors and curators alike. Fondazione Arte CRT also made notable acquisitions, including works by Marwa Arsanios and Steffani Jemisson. These acquisitions not only contribute to the growth of the institutional collections but also support artists in their artistic journeys.
