What To Know About The Greta Thunberg Book

When her critics talk about climate activist Greta Thunberg, they like to portray the now 19-year-old Swede as a naïve as well as radical speaker who pursues noble goals - but loses sight of the economic and social realities of our world. Greta Thunberg herself has made it her mission to secure the future of life on earth, a seemingly impossible task. And yet she has managed to mobilise hundreds of thousands of people and bring public focus to this issue. In her book, you find a harsh reckoning with the global elites.

A collection of short essays

100 authors have contributed 90 short articles, ranging from one to nine pages, to the climate book. These include scientists who have been at the forefront of climate science and policy for decades, such as Michael Oppenheimer. Author of the first popular books on climate change, Bill McKibben, Elizabeth Colbert, or Eugen Linden. One of the most widely read books on climate is by Margaret Atwood. Historian of science Naomi Oresquez, who established a scientific consensus on climate change, as well as articles by biologists like Ayana Elizabeth Johnson and Robin Wall Kimmeler, economists like Kate Lawworth, and social scientists like Erika Chenoweth and Naomi Klein, All these experts contributed to the making of this book, integrating their contributions into the different chapters. In the book, a distinction was made between: how climate works; how our planet is changing; how and how it affects change; what we have done about it; and what we need to do now.

Criticism of Politics and Media

“The first step to overcoming a crisis is to recognise that you are in it,” writes Swedish climate activist Greta Thunberg. “And we are not there yet. Few are aware of how serious and urgent the climate crisis is. Many don’t mind either, but Mrs. Thunberg does not exclude politicians. “Instead of finally taking action, they keep making promises they don’t keep and regularly miss their usually vague targets,” says Thunberg. Greta Thunberg accuses governments of complete failure, and not only that, they do not change their actions even though they are aware of them. The time for small steps in the right direction is long gone. “When the bathtub is about to overflow, I don’t look for a bucket, and I don’t put a towel on the floor,” the 19-year-old author explains. “The first thing you should do is turn off the tap as soon as possible. To leave the water running is to ignore or deny the problem.

But it was not only the political leaders who failed; it was also the media. They are the reason why we cannot stop the climate crisis. Because of poor media coverage and a lack of honesty about the crisis, information is not getting out to the public. Thunberg accuses the media of being lied to and kept in the dark, thus depriving them of their democratic rights.

All in all, the book about climate change is not only critical of politics and the media but also offers a variety of perspectives and expert opinions on the topic of climate change and does so in a form that is compact and understandable.
