Champagne was particularly in demand abroad; 8.5 percent more were exported, and the turnover even increased by 20 percent. The most exported spirit was, once again, cognac. Here, sales grew by more than nine percent, even though they declined by four percent.
Only aerospace is France’s second-largest export after wine and spirits. The USA remained the most important market. Exports to the USA increased by 14 percent to 4.7 billion euros last year. This corresponds to more than a quarter of exports. “The United States has confirmed its role as the driving force behind French wine and spirits exports,” FEVS chairman Cesar Giron told the Reuters news agency.
China as a Future Market
Exports to Great Britain, France’s second-largest market, increased by almost seven percent to 1.7 billion euros. The winegrowers have high hopes for China. Last year, business with the People’s Republic still suffered from Beijing’s strict Corona policy. However, significant growth is expected for 2023 after the restrictions have been eased.
“The FEVS expects to see an upswing in wine and spirits in China in the coming months,” Giron said. The resumption of summer travel should also boost duty-free sales. The war against Ukraine has reduced exports to Russia by half. According to FEVS, however, this market is of comparatively little importance. The war has more of an indirect effect, as the prices for energy and grain for the production of vodka have risen.
