The first inhabitants arrived on the island in 2000 B.C., as can be demonstrated by the cave paintings in Sant Antoni. Over the centuries, a variety of different peoples and groups settled on the island, giving it its cultural diversity today. Tourism did not prevail on the island. Due to their rather isolated location in the Mediterranean, the inhabitants were largely engaged in livestock farming and agriculture. The first tourist activities began in the 19th century, with the initiation of a steam line between Palma and Ibiza. The Habsburg Archduke Ludwig Salvador fell so in love with the island during his trips that he wrote a multi-volume tour guide about it. In the mid-1930s, the first hotel on the island was built, and 20 years later, the first airport. First used as a military airport and later as a civilian airport, it laid the foundation for international tourism.
