Google has influenced the world. Over the past 20 years, the company's famous formula has made it commonplace to find information on the Internet within seconds. But what were the beginnings of Google, and how did a garage start-up manage to become one of the most important players in the field of IT?

The beginnings of Google

The company was not, from the beginning, a highflier. In fact, Google founders Larry Page and Sergey Brin had a hard time convincing people to take the company seriously in the late 1990s. The two met as students at Stanford University and worked together on a vision to create a search engine that would surpass all previous ones. Even when Google proved the doubters wrong by developing a better way to navigate the Internet, the company still had to fight to stay relevant.

The breakthrough was achieved by Google, through its relatively simple and easy-to-use page layout, which at that time loaded faster than the already existing pages. This made it more advantageous and attracted a large number of users.

The next important stage that brought Google to the top was the introduction of AdWords, through which anyone could place their ads in the search engine.

Google in the present

In 2004, Google floated on the stock market. Initially, Google shares cost $85, but they rose to $100.34 on the same day. In one fell swoop, about 1,000 Google employees who owned company stock at the time became millionaires. Even today, about 99% of Google’s total revenue comes from online advertising.

Google’s revenue in 2022 was approximately USD 279.81 billion. This corresponds to an increase in revenue of about ten percent compared to the previous year. Since October 2015, Google has been a subsidiary of Alphabet, Inc. Alphabet represents the umbrella organisation of Google and was founded due to a restructuring of Google. In addition to Google, this umbrella organisation also includes companies such as Calico, Google Capital, and Google Ventures.

Google’s meteoric rise came not through complicated designs and big campaigns, but with the simplicity of their portal and its user-friendly and simple design. Only after the company could adorn itself with a large number of users, further functions added. So, especially at the beginning of this success story, the saying “less is sometimes more” fits.
