Obesity has become a global problem over the last few years, leading to its classification as a chronic disease. In these cases, the point where simply counting calories and doing some exercise is the solution to the problem is long past.

High in numbers

In a study published in 2019, the Paris-based Organisation for Economic Co-operation and Development (OECD) states that by 2050 there are also expected to be around 92 million premature deaths from this cause.

According to experts, more than half of the population in 34 of the 36 countries in the OECD is overweight (BMI of over 25) and almost one in four is obese (BMI of over 30). According to the study, obesity slows down the gross domestic product in industrialised countries by 3.3% on average, thus slowing down the countries’ economies and the prosperity of society. To prevent this prediction from coming true and to keep the numbers under control, billions of dollars are spent annually on treatment and education.

Measures

The global obesity treatment market was estimated at $14.02 billion in 2021 and is expected to grow at a compound annual growth rate of 10.1% over the following five years.

More and more government measures are being taken to raise awareness about obesity and its harmful effects on health. Demand for technologically advanced weight loss devices and programmes is increasing. Each of these contributes to the growth of the global market. In addition, there are opportunities for market growth due to growing health and fitness trends, including gym culture, increasing beauty consciousness, and the growing trend of weight loss surgery and healthcare spending.

Childhood obesity

But it is not only adults who are affected, as more and more children are also suffering from obesity. According to the World Health Organization (WHO), 39 million children under the age of five were overweight or obese in 2020.  Chronic diseases such as type 2 diabetes have become more widespread as a result. One in ten Americans, or more than 37 million people, have diabetes, and 90-95% of them have type 2 diabetes, according to the US Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. Although type 2 diabetes is more common in people over 45, it is also more common in children, adolescents and young adults.

If nothing changes in this area in the future, it can be assumed that the corresponding market will continue to grow. This means that obesity treatment could quickly become one of the twelve most important therapies worldwide. It is predicted that this niche could grow from 2.4 billion US dollars in 2022 to 54 billion US dollars in the next few years until 2030.
